History of Churu

The town is said to be founded by the chieftain of Jats, Churru in 1620 AD. The town is situated amidst the golden sand dunes that opens gate to the Thar Desert. Before independence in 1947, the town constituted a part of the state of Bikaner. The district was formed in 1948 which comprised of three tehsils; Taarangar, Rajgarh and Churu with recognition of the administration of the state of Bikaner.

Climate and Geography

Churu is situated at 28.30°N 74.95°E. It has an average elevation of 292 meters. There are plenty of sand dunes that encircle the city. Due to scanty rainfall, the vegetation is also less. Among the easily visible greenery, you can easily spot babul, royara, khejri and kair bushes on the shifting sand dunes. Apart from these trees, you can also find siras trees, peepal and neem trees here.

While the winters are freezing cold, the summers are extremely hot. You can find spots of ice on the crops during the months of December and January. You won't experience much variation in the minimum and maximum temperature in the town.

Churu is a land of sandalwood, a shopper's weakness and also a tourist's delight. The crafts made of sandal shall lure you to the market. Apart from the sandal crafts, you can find vibrant colored fabrics in tie and dye, woolen materials, gram, millet that are found in plenty in the market. Churu is also well known for the leather products.

Salasar Balaji is a famous temple here that attracts hundreds of pilgrims and devotees every year. Additionally, you cannot afford to miss the domes here. The Godia Chhatri, Aath Kambh Chhatri are some of the lovely constructions that are superbly curved.
